Among the never married or the ones divorced, these days we come across many choose-to-be singletons in India, yes in India. Some look tired, irritated while others look curious, and cheerful. Some have moved on to leadership positions, brands and parties others have moved to solitude. I have been surrounded by such choose-to-be single friends.

Why do they choose to be singles? They are not bad looking people with a bad luck in career or relationship. Neither are they shabbily dressed, dull looking who study philosophy types.  In fact they are trendy and are doing good for themselves. They are not even selfish. They share their goodies, love laughing at silly gossips and cry with you in bad times. Well, every individual has his or her reason to the preferred single status, of which, in India, they are not very expressive about. Being there as a friend I can make a few observations.

Insatiable hunger for Success: Work, work and work. Work centric. They are, their jobs.
Commitment Phobia: Filled with many ifs. What if I fall out of love, what if it doesn’t work, what he/she cheats… blah. (It could be because failed-marriage in family)
Unwilling to Change: Comfort is important. Freedom is important.

Most of them lead a comfortable life and when one looks from distant, it looks all greens. The younger generation finds it more appealing. Choosing to remain single is entirely an individual decision but one must not follow it blindly for a rose comes with some thorns. I am not favoring either of the status, married or single. However here is my observation.

As a single:
You can devout your self completely to your passion, profession and vision.
You can contribute more to the society.
You can be adventurous with some worth-taking risks.
You can be a good friend –who attends all the parties, and gives lot of gifts.

As a family person:
You raise wonderful kids, who are future leaders of the country.
Take good care of the institution of family/marriage that makes good society.
Become good Teacher of Interpersonal skills.
Cook variety of delicacies for your single friends.

Bible does approve of those who choose to remain single. One thing to keep in mind is that, it is not an excuse to commit adultery or engage in acts and activities somewhat of that sort. For such a grave sin will have grave consequences not only on the person, but also on family and society at large.
